Sunglasses IN Florence, SC

Some people don't need contacts or eyeglasses, but everyone needs sunglasses. Here are three things our eye doctors at Harrington Vision Center in Florence want you to know about sunglasses.

.

Sunglasses Help Everyone Enjoy Their Time in the Sun

No matter what the time of year, sunglasses help you enjoy your time outdoors more. Nearly all sunglasses nowadays provide you with some UV protection. (That's really important for a reason we will explain in the next section.) But not all sunglasses are polarized. Bright sunlight gets reflected from water, pavement, and shiny surfaces in all directions. Polarizing lenses block sunlight reflected horizontally and admit sunlight reflected vertically.

This is how polarizing sunglasses eliminate glare, so you can see a kid crossing the street, a fish beneath the surface of the water, or a white baseball coming at you across the baseball field. Polarizing lenses help you have more fun in the sun.

If you "don't quite" need glasses or contacts, for example, your vision is 20/25. The color of the sunglasses you choose can make a big difference. Gray or green tints are OK for blocking glare, but yellow or orange tints add contrast so you can see more detail. Your optometrist can advise you on which polarized sunglasses will work best for you.

All Sunglasses Aren't the Same

UV protection can help you keep your sight. Years of UV light encourage the formation of cataracts and aggravate some diseases of the retina. Sunglasses without UV protection actually increase the amount of UV light reaching the interior of your eye because your pupils dilate in lower light levels. Your eye doctor can confirm whether your sunglasses protect against UV rays. We can help you ditch your clip-ons with prescription sunglasses.

Prescription Sunglasses Can Make a Huge Difference

With clip-on sunglasses, you don't get protection on the sides of your eyes. Your optometrist can prescribe wrap-around sunglasses with vision correction built-in to give you the best possible vision for your outdoor activities in the sun. You can see a difference in your tennis game, your golf game, fishing, hiking, or just laying out at the pool. But you need to be seen by your optometrist once a year to get the precise prescription you need.
