Getting a Contact Lens Exam

A contact lens exam at Harrington Vision Center is the first step in finding the right contact lens prescription and getting the right fit for your eyes and your life. If you have an extra busy life, our optometrist might suggest extended wear contacts. If you have struggled with dry eyes, daily disposable contacts might be right for you. If you have astigmatism,  some other specialty contacts may be necessary. Some may even wind up with scleral contacts that rest over the eye, rather than just on the cornea.  Whichever type of contact lenses you wear, our staff will help make sure you are prepared to make them an important part of your life and give you the guidance you need so you can continue to see better going forward.

Types of Contacts

While the most popular type of contacts is soft contacts, due to their comfort for most people, there are actually many other options that you may want to consider.

Soft Contacts and Silicone Hydrogels

Most soft lenses are made from hydrogels, which is a water-infused plastic or silicone hydrogel lenses, that allows for even more oxygen to pass through them. This makes them very pliable and is the most comfortable.

Rigid Gas Permeable

Rigid gas-permeable lenses are more rigid and are reminiscent of old hard lenses, however, they do allow for more oxygen to pass through the lenses, making them more comfortable, although they do take more getting used to than soft lenses. For some, the more sturdy lens is necessary due to astigmatism or other problems with the corneas

Hybrid Contacts

Hybrid Contacts have a rigid center but are like soft contacts on the outside. They are less common and more expensive than other types of contacts but can be an option for those who have a history of difficulty with other types of lenses.

Decorative Lenses

There are some who wear contact lenses just for fun to change their eye color, but even for these,  a contact lens exam is needed.
